Pagoda dogwood yellowing branches #803368

Asked July 27, 2022, 5:14 PM EDT

The branches on this pagoda dogwood are turning a deep golden color and losing all leaves and berries. What is this disease, is it treatable, how can I treat it, or should I destroy it?

Expert Response

Before I send this along to a tree expert, would you please attach 3 more pictures?
-place a plain sheet of paper behind a branch and take a close up of 3-4 leaves showing the problem.
- turn a leaf over and show the back of it.
- one picture of the trunk of the tree where it enters the soil.
Please include how much and when you water. Does a sprinkler hit the tree and wet the leaves? Were any chemicals or fertilizers applied within 15 feet of the tree?
How long has the tree been planted in that location?
These details will be very helpful.
I will watch for your additional info.
Thank you very much.
Pictures are attached.
I've also included pics of the stems that are in different stages of succumbing to this disease.
Yes, this pagoda dogwood is hit by sprinkler 5 days a week. Wish I could fix that but likely cannot.

My apology. The remaining info you requested:
The tree is not watered in any regular basis anymore, except during long periods with no rain, and however much water it gets from the arcing sprinkler.
It was planted about 3 years ago.
I periodically feed it milorganite or Holly tone. It received a little milorganite a few days ago.
Last year, this same process occurred. I looked it up and cut off the affected limbs treating the sheers and the area cut with alcohol.
This spring it flowered beautifully and had a full crown of berries until this process began again. I noticed it about 10 days ago.
Thank you,
Rochelle

Hi Rochelle,
This looks like golden canker of pagoda dogwood.
https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/golden-canker-pagoda-dogwood
Best advice is to prune out infected branches when the shrub is dormant, and temps are consistently below 32 degrees. Sanitize shears between cuts.
The spores for this canker are commonly found in pagoda dogwood and flare up in the right conditions. The sprinkler might make conditions better for the canker.
Perhaps pruning out the infected branches this winter, then moving the tree next spring to be outside the reach of the sprinkler would help the shrub thrive into the future?
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you,
Julie
