Rosemary - Will it survive? #803315

Asked July 27, 2022, 1:40 PM EDT

My rosemary, that was planted probably 20 years ago, is quite woody and has some yellow foliage. It was spilt in two a few years ago by the very heavy valley snow we received. I pruned it a little after that. This year, I noticed a lot of dead branches so I cut them back. I wonder if it needs a major pruning in the winter but I'm not sure how far back I can prune it since it's so woody. What can I do to help it survive? Thanks, Karen

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Karen.  Your plant appears to be exhibiting the long term effects of inconsistent pruning, which should be done in early spring every year.  You want to make sure that you leave a growth node--where leaves come from the stem--because totally woody tissue will not grow stems or leaves.  Typically, you can godown to 6-8 inches maximum.  But that may not be the case with yours.  You will not help the plant by pruning away anything but the clearly-dead stems in this hot weather.  It just creates wounds from which moisture escapes.  You can water it during hot periods, so long as the soil drains well.  Otherwise, just leave it alone until spring.  Good luck!

Thank you!! I only touched the absolutely dead stuff. I'll wait until early spring and then take another look. I appreciate your expertise!!
