Best way to handle Nutsedge? #803134

Asked July 26, 2022, 1:52 PM EDT

Hi, my backyard was re-seeded last year after an army worm invasion destroyed my grass. The grass is now coming back, though much of the yard has now been taken over by what I am told is called Nutsedge. I was told not to pull this in flower beds or it will just come back with a vengeance. What is the best way to get rid of it? I used a Nutsedge killer in my flower beds, but how do I get rid of it in my yard? I have a professional company coming out and spraying, but they continually tell me it will "take a while" and will be a "work in progress." Is there anything I can do on my own to eradicate this so my grass seeding and fertilizing efforts are not a waste? I was considering spraying the Nutsedge Killer (Sulfentrazone) all over my yard but have heard varying opinions on whether this is truly safe for grass or if it will kill it also. Can you advise?

Expert Response

Good afternoon, and thank you for your question.  Yellow nutsedge is a difficult weed to control.  Your lawncare company likely sprayed sulfentrazone or halosulfuron, so I would not suggest making another application on your own, as you may go over the recommended label rate.  They may need to come out and make an additional application.  Be sure you do not mow your lawn prior to their application, as the leaf tissue is how the pesticide is absorbed.  Here is a factsheet for  further information:  https://www.extension.purdue.edu/extmedia/ay/ay-19-w.pdf

Thanks.
