Giant Hornet #802872

Asked July 25, 2022, 11:21 AM EDT

These hornets are living in our crawl space. I have been unable to locate the nest, I have just seen them come and go. I have never seen hornets this large before so I am wondering what the heck they are.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question and photos. The insects pictured here are European hornets, a long-established, non-native insect species that is common in our area. They are not aggressive toward humans, but do have the potential to sting if they feel threatened.

Usually, when the nest is outside, we recommend leaving it in place and undisturbed if possible. But if you feel that there might be a nest inside your crawlspace, but are unable to locate the nest yourself, you might want to contact a professional exterminator for assistance. The pros might be better able to figure out where the nest is, and they also have the proper equipment and materials to destroy it safely and effectively.

I hope this is helpful.
