Kale has black spots #802826
Asked July 25, 2022, 5:12 AM EDT
Kale has black/brown spots all over its leaves. Leaves also become yellow. Is it bacteria or fungus illness? How can I treat this? Can I eat the leaves with spots?

Treatment could include removing the worst affected leaves and/or plants, rotating cabbage family plants to another place in the garden each year, and trying to control cabbage flea beetles which may spread the disease. Fungicides are generally not all that useful in home garden settings. Sanitation is more effective.
If you want to bring some plant samples to the Extension office (505 N. Columbia River Highway, St. Helens), I would be glad to look at it in more detail. You can also call me at<personal data hidden>. Chip Bubl OSU Extension/Columbia County

Thanks for your reply. Concerning how old the plant- it is around of 4-5 months old, and leaves I have just gathered few days ago. Speaking about flea beetles - they are so annoying. I think there are moths which always fly around especially in morning and evenings. I try my best by spraying cabbage with tar soap with ammonia, pepper, mustard, but it works little. Can you suggest any methods to fight moths and
to fight moths and others without chemicals ? Or at least with not very strong chemicals.
And I wanted to add that these "moths alike "- it seems to me that they themselves eat my cabbage not their caterpillars..
