are you able to determine what's wrong with the sedum in the middle of the line?

Expert Response

Are you referring to the splaying-out of the stems? This is pretty typical of several types of perennials by midsummer, including Sedum, Nepeta, perennial mums, older ornamental grass specimens, etc. Overly-fertile or over-irrigated soil might account for some of it, though it can also be variety-specific with regards to stem sturdiness; plant breeders do target this trait when generating new cultivars since it's a known issue. We don't know why this individual out of the group of presumably the same cultivar is splaying more than the rest. New growth may yet arise out of the center, now that it's getting more direct light, that will help cover it up over the next few weeks.

If there are other symptoms you're referring to, we can't see them clearly in the photos and would need some close-up images to assess.

We haven’t watered too frequently, but now wont water at all for a while. Our soil has a lot of clay.
