should I prune this Spirea #802808

Asked July 24, 2022, 9:17 PM EDT

This has grown very well this Spring but now the branched are drooping and the plant is ghollow in the middle. If I lightly prune it, will flowers still grow the remainder of this season?

Expert Response

Steven, you don't say what the plant is but it looks like a dwarf variety of Spirea.  You can prune it, but you will lose the flowers from the parts you cut off.  At this time of year, and with our very hot conditions, blooming will slow down anyway.  Often, pruning will not only rejuvenate the plant but also encourage reblooming.  So, I would definitely do some light pruning to shape the plant and open it up for better air circulation.

Here is some more information on the care of Spirea from Clemson University extension:

Hope this helps.
