New trees with leaf damage, what should we do? #802016
Asked July 19, 2022, 1:24 PM EDT
Hello,
We planted some Shumard oaks and Green Orchard Maples last Fall and they both have leaf damage of brown, dry areas .
We believe they may have suffered from sun scorch because we had some very dry winds blow through before we mulched for the summer
and before we increased our watering schedule. Is this a correct diagnosis and is there anything else we should do at this point/
Also, does this reflect on the survivability of the tree?
Thanks!

Hi again,
You're welcome to group your questions together if you wish!
There are still a lot of leaves that have green tissue and it may be a result of the transplanting last fall and the trees getting established. When you're watering, continue to focus your efforts on the root ball of the tree, as the roots are likely still close to the root ball and not in the surrounding soils. Keep the area moist, but not too wet. Watering 2-3 times per week is a good start. Also put mulch around the base of the tree, but leave it off the top of the root ball.
