Contorted filbert damage #801643

Asked July 17, 2022, 4:10 PM EDT

We had sudden die back of a branch on our 35-year-old contorted filbert. We pruned it out today and you can see that there’s some kind of fungus or some thing that did the damage. What would you recommend we do next?

Benton County Oregon

Expert Response

Without knowing exactly what caused this, make sure the pruning cut was made well below the affected wood into healthy wood if there was a canker. If possible, prune back to the branch collar, the raised ring around the base of every branch that produces the callus tissue to heal over the pruning wound.
