Single Prairie Magic tree #801552

Asked July 16, 2022, 9:57 PM EDT

I have a 4-5 year old apple tree that has a lot of half dollar like red and green apples on it. It's a lone tree because 7 others have failed over the past 10 years. For reference I'm in zone 3. Why or how are there apples without a pollinator? Thanks

Expert Response

Without knowing the name of the tree, I can only say that some apple trees are self fertile. This means that they do not need another tree to produce apples. Another possibility is that a neighbor may have a crabapple apple tree or apple within wind blowing distance and pollen is reaching the tree.  An over abundance of bees can also cause this to happen as they move from tree to tree.  This would be the most unlikely explanation.
