Sudden wilting on rhubarb #801443

Asked July 16, 2022, 9:42 AM EDT

My rhubarb plant that I just planted this spring was beautiful and seemingly healthy. We had commented on its vigor one morning and later that day, all the big stalks/leaves just fell over. I thought maybe the big rain was just too heavy but the stalks aren't broken, then look like they are wilting (photo 092449). The new leaves looked good yesterday and I thought it might recover but as you can see in the photo, they are getting weak too. I have another rhubarb plant that I have had for 5 years which does well (photo 093212) except for one leaf at the bottom (see photo). It is in close proximity to this one so I am concerned about it.

Expert Response

Hi Karrie,

There are several possible causes including  poor aeration from compacted soil, over watering, site too hot or perhaps roots and crown were compromised during planting.  You should also check crown to see if there is evidence of feeding.  Plant may recover.
