Problem with Milkweed #801322
Asked July 15, 2022, 1:16 PM EDT
We have two patches of Common Milkweed in our field. Last year several plants in the one patch developed curled leaves. This year one plant so far is showing the same symptom. The second patch, about 50' away, looks fine. No aphids were found on the plant. Earwigs were inside several of the curled leaves. A fuzzy white planthopper was on the underside of one leaf. The plants are just starting to bloom. The area is sunny, well drained, and receives whatever rainfall Mother Nature provides. I am hoping this problem does not affect the second patch of milkweeds. Thanks for any insight.

It is so great that you are growing milkweed in your field! Unfortunately, it is not obvious what the problem is from your photos. It could be a crown rot like southern blight or perhaps stem/root boring by Red Milkweed Beetles (a native insect which relies on milkweed, just like Monarchs). You might want to pull this plant and check the root system for clues.
Unfortunately, milkweed pests and problems can out-compete a small number of plants but, Common Milkweed is aggressive enough that a minor dieback is likely a non-issue and the overall colony will be fine and still be prolific enough to support wildlife.
