Grape leaf distortion #801112

Asked July 14, 2022, 12:33 PM EDT

What is happening with these grape leaves? This is a 5-year old seedling grape growing in a container. The new leaves of the last few weeks look like this, but earlier ones are normal. I fertilized the pot with nitrogen recently, but otherwise I just water it regularly. I found a couple of (maybe) cast aphid skins, but otherwise no pests I can find on new or older leaves. Photos show the very bumpy and distorted growth. Anther photo with backlighting shows the leaf transparency.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.  The bumps on the upper surface of the leaves is a symptom of  an infestation of the grape erineum mite, described here:  https://pnwhandbooks.org/insect/small-fruit/grape/grape-grape-erineum-mite
I trust that the information in this diagnostic resource is helpful.
