I noticed something which looked a bit like bag worms in our elm tree. They appear to only have settled on three to five branches at this point. They are definitely not bag worms (at least not the ones I'm familiar with), and the brown clusters don't contain any critters - at least not now. Can you help us identify our friends (see picture attached) based on the artifacts they have left behind? We live on the South side of Fort Collins (Shields and Harmony).

Hi Gordon,
This is a green ash and you're seeing old ash flower gall, which is harmless. It's really just a cosmetic issue, so just keep caring for your tree as you normally would (and consider what your plans are to treat for emerald ash borer in the future).
