How to eliminate curley dock #800811

Asked July 12, 2022, 6:29 PM EDT

I have tried pulling this weed up but it keeps returning to my leech field. Years ago you recommended Round Up. There must be something less toxic. Please advise.

Gilpin County Colorado

Expert Response

A tenacious perennial weed with a deep taproot making it hard to pull, and portions of this root left in the ground will regenerate. Fairly pleasant tasting, the leaves are very rich in vitamins, especially vitamins A and C, and can be eaten raw or cooked.

These are the best control methods for curly dock.

  • Combination herbicides containing mecoprop, dicamba and 2,4-D are effective in the control of Curly dock in fall and/or spring.
  • Mowing seed heads will suppress spread of curly dock by keeping seeds from reproducing
  • Use a shovel to remove crown 2 inches below soil surface
