what wrong with my recently planted burr oak? #800688

Asked July 12, 2022, 10:51 AM EDT

We had a burr oak planted in June. It had very small leaves, most of which turned brown. We asked the tree people ablaut it ,and were told it would "re-leaf". It did get a few new leaves , but these seem to be turning brown also. We are watering it as directed ( and the 7 other trees and shrubs that were planted are doing very well). I suspect this is a tree that will die, but I would like to know also if we could plant another tree later in the same spot ( not an oak- maybe a resistant elm)We are in Cuyahoga county ( not an option on drop down, so I put Lake)

Dear Toby,

I am assuming that your "tree people" are with the company from which you bought the tree and that there is a guarantee that came with the purchase of the tree.  Also, is there a certified arborist among your tree people?  That individual should be able to give you a more scientific assessment.

If I were you, I would keep calling them with updates about the "health" of the tree and your care of the tree.  It certainly does not seem happy in its new home, although one month is a relatively short time.

It would be difficult at this stage to say what could or should not be planted in the same place, without knowing what is wrong (if anything) with your current tree.  Two options are to have a soil test conducted.  One choice is available through the Franklin County Extension office.  That contact information is here:  https://franklin.osu.edu/program-areas/agriculture-and-natural-resources/soil-testing.

A second option would be to take a sample from the tree and send it to the C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic.  How to do that is detailed here:  https://ppdc.osu.edu/submit-sample

But again, my first course of action would be through the company that sold and planted them.  Best of luck.
