Chewed leaves #800122

Asked July 08, 2022, 4:56 PM EDT

My rose bush has all holes in leaves as well as my other plant (don’t know what that is) Not sure if I need to spray with something. I don’t see anything on the plant.

St. Louis County Minnesota

Expert Response

The rose leaves have been damaged by a sawfly larva called a rose slug.  Following is information about this insect and what to do about it.  In this case the larvae may have finished feeding and no longer be present.

Rose slug damage varies from minor to major. They sometimes defoliate rose plants.

Most plants, such as what appears to be a kind of rudbeckia in the second photo, can tolerate considerable leaf damage.  Unless the damage is progressive (continues to spread), it's ok to ignore it.
