Brown spots on Pepper plants #798674

Asked June 29, 2022, 6:50 PM EDT

What is happening to my three pepper plants? See pictures of brown spots & leaves are dying. They are three different types. This seemed to start as soon as it got hot... Do I throw these away and plant new ones??

Expert Response

i'm afraid your plants are too far gone to save.  I believe they have a blight or virus.  You need to dispose of the plants and the soil in the pots.  Then disinfect your pots with a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water.  Rinse that out thoroughly, fill with fresh potting soil and you can put in new plants.  Also, any gardening gloves or implements used for the peppers should be disinfected with the same solution to avoid infecting new plants.  You can check out possibilities at this link:

Thanks for your response.

Can this Virus/Blight spread to my tomato plants that are close??

Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and eggplants are all in the same family so whatever attacks one can attack the other.  Make sure you disinfect your gloves and tools as recommended so you don't transfer any disease to your tomato plants.  Keep the tomato plants away from the diseased peppers.  Once your pot and equipment are sterilized and the soil replaced, you should be okay with new plants.
