Hi. I have a window box that is almost always in the shade due to the many trees in our yard. Are there any options for perennials that would do well in this environment? Either flowering or nonflowering plants would be fine, but native plants that support pollinators are preferred. I live in Minneapolis. Thanks.

Expert Response
Plants in window boxes wont survive over the winter. There isn’t enough insulation against cold and below zero temperatures.
To support pollinators plants have to be flowering and perennials generally bloom for about two weeks. Herbs might be a good substitute. They have a long bloom time and do well in the shade. They are annuals and inexpensive to replace.
