Proper Care / Maintenance #798443

Asked June 29, 2022, 9:00 AM EDT

Hi :), I am seeking further guidance on which educational resources pertaining to total lawn & landscape maintenance & care for our home located in Montgomery County are worth obtaining? More specifically, at the moment (which is not ideal in terms of time of year I realize) I am in the midst of reclaiming our grass block driveway in Dayton’s historic Oregon District. The house / property were neglected for nearly 5 years. Weeds, dead grass, hard soil, washed away top soil, overgrowth, etc. are dominate features. It is also worth noting that there is no sprinkler system AND the seemingly non-existing foundation of the grass block pavers makes for poor drainage in several place’s. This aside, I wish to learn as much as I can on these topics in hopes of making progress toward restoring this one aspect of historic property AND to do so properly. Any guidance you may have to offer in the way of educational resources (websites, books, Montgomery county extension guides, etc.) would be greatly appreciated :) ! Thank you! -Nick

Expert Response

Hi Nick,
Thanks for allowing me to help you with your question.   It sounds like you have a big project ahead of you.  The first thing I would do is to have your soil tested.  Call Montgomery County and see if they carry any that you can purchase.   I will include their contact info below.  You will probably have to amend your soil or even bring in new.  Here are 2 articles on block grass driveways for you:  https://www.truegridpaver.com/what-you-should-know-about-grass-driveways/
