Lilac trees not blooming #798441

Asked June 29, 2022, 8:56 AM EDT

Why won't my 3 year old lilac trees ( 2) blossom/bloom? They did the 1st year I planted them, they receive 6+ hours of sun & are healthy.

Thanks for your question.

Lilacs can be fussy and sometimes unpredictable. I am not surprised by their blooming right after you planted them. This is the normal case. Their blooming at that time was largely due to energy that had been previously stored in them. The second year after you planted them was largely a restorative time for them. Blooming at that time would be unusual. I am very confident that in 2023 you will see them blooming in full force. For this season (2022) don’t do any pruning. That can wait until 2023. Apply some 10-10-10 fertilizer (available at any big box store or gardening center) to them in late August of this season around their base. No sooner. Water it in well. Keep watering them into October. Just be a patient with them. They love sun so you have a good location for them.

If you think that there are still issues with them next spring, please get back to us and we’ll try to help you. Good Luck!!
