Native Ohio Backyard Reed Cultivation #797478

Asked June 23, 2022, 3:37 PM EDT

My husband wants to plant bamboo to cultivate it for the wood it gives for crafts/decor, he's also considering rattan. These have obvious problems with maintenance and the rhizome invasion issues; so I'm wondering if there is a reedy/woody plant native to Ohio that grows similarly quickly and usefully?

Dear Jaret
There are several materials that can be woven. Here is an article that discusses a few.

Some people also cultivate cattails for weaving.

But if your husband really want bamboo, i have a suggestion. Put out a call throught your local wxtension office for someone who has a bamboo stand and is willing to share.

I actually have a large stsnd in Athens Ohio and would certainly be willing to alliw him to come and cut what he wants.  If you are interested, just let me know.
