Apple spots #797348

Asked June 22, 2022, 8:03 PM EDT

Hi. I was hoping you could help me with my apple tree. The apples are just emerging. I'm not sure what variety it is as we just moved in. Is there any way to treat my tree and will the apples still be edible.

Thank you for your patience and question.  In order to provide an accurate answer, we need a clear photo of one or two leaves, especially if they have spots or holes.  Could you also please cut open an apple to see if there are any insects, larva (worms) or discoloration and photo that as well?  Thanks!

Thank you for the photos.  Worth a thousand words!  Your tree has a fungal disease called scab, described here:  https://today.oregonstate.edu/news/7-tips-controlling-frustrating-apple-scab
Applying a fungicide now will be ineffective, but you can begin removing and destroying infected leaves, so they don't overwinter in your yard/orchard.  Pruning can help increase airflow and reduce humidity:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/apple-trees-benefit-proper-pruning-spring-summer
This branch of Ask Extension cannot advise about food safety, but the consistency of the fruit ("corky") may deter you from consuming them.  Good luck!
