Worms #797042

Asked June 21, 2022, 1:44 PM EDT

These worms are destroying apple trees! Have not been able to locate tent like nests in trees. Can you advise on how to get rid of them before they completely destroy the trees? Thank you

Expert Response

These are spongy moths (formerly called gypsy moth). They may defoliate the trees, but the leaves will return in the following season.

By the time the caterpillars are the size in your photo, there are 3 options:
- Hand pick
- Apply a pyrethroid insecticide (active ingredient such as bifenthrin, cyhalothrin, deltamethrin). These are broad spectrums that can also kill other beneficial insects too. If you use an insecticide, be sure it is labeled for use on trees.
- Apply burlap bands to stop caterpillars from climbing the trees.
