Phlox leaves turning yellow #795557

Asked June 12, 2022, 3:05 PM EDT

Hi - several of my phlox have yellow leaves at the bottom and are turning brown. Someone said it’s asters yellow and I want to make sure. Here is a photo of one of them.

Expert Response

We think the leaves of the plants shown in the photo have been infested by spider mites.  If you carefully inspect the underside of affected leaves with a hand lens you may be able to see the mites or evidence that they have been there.

Thanks so much! I am using the hose to hopefully know them off!

It's worth a try but the plants often don't fully recover from the damage already done.

Most insecticides don't work well to control mites even if mites are listed on the label.  Bifenthrin is said to be relatively effective.

Spider mites on phlox often become a perennial problem.  When that happens, it's best to begin controls before damage is evident.  Inspect the leaves' undersides frequently.

I will make sure to watch them closely next season. Fingers crossed for this year…thanks again
