When and how do I prune winterberry shrubs? We have 7. They are probably 5-8 years old. The new growth looks rather scraggly right now. Also, I'm wondering about when and how to prune the golden barberries.

Expert Response
Winterberry flowers and fruits on new growth, so it should be pruned in late winter or early spring before the buds break.
Winterberry doesn't require much pruning. Shape the plants as you wish in late winter.
Late winter or early spring is a good time to prune barberries too. However, it's ok to prune as needed anytime until late summer. It's best to prune to maintain the plants' natural form.
