Oregano problem #794983

Asked June 08, 2022, 6:58 PM EDT

I just acquired this plant. It was fine when I bought it. I don't know why the leaves are getting these yellowish areas. What am I doing wrong? The plant is in full sun. I water every other day. There is drainage in the bottom of the pot. Thank you for your help.

The white pinpoint spots (stipples) can be caused by one or more of the numerous insect pests with mouthparts that suck out plant sap from leaves. These include leafhoppers and thrips, as well as whitefly and aphids. The injury is usually minor and control measures are typically not warranted. Herbs with this type of spotting damage are safe to eat, just wash them well first, or you can trim off the most damaged leaves if you wish.

Beneficial insects like parasitoids and general predators (ants, spiders, ladybugs, lacewings) can help to reduce pest numbers. Planting a variety of flowering plants around your home will support those beneficial insects to provide natural control.

Covering plants with a piece of row cover fabric early in the season or spraying with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil are some additional management approaches. Follow label directions to make sure the product is safe for use on edible plants and to know how long to wait after application of the product before you can harvest/eat it safely.
