Crown Gall #794710

Asked June 07, 2022, 1:19 PM EDT

Good afternoon. Is the dahlia tuber shown exhibiting symptoms of crown gall? The commercial grower does indicate that the form of their tubers might be “odd” as they grow in rocky conditions in Montana. Does the Kent County extension office accept samples to diagnose gall? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi Megan, thanks for the question.

There doesn't appear to be any evidence in the pictures of Crown Gall. It is usually irregular and bumpy. Samples can be sent to the Plant & Pest Diagnostics (msu.edu) lab.  Check out the following links for additional information:

Managing Pests in Gardens: Floriculture: Diseases: Crown gall—UC IPM (ucanr.edu)

Gall / Leafy Gall - National Dahlia Society (dahlia-nds.co.uk)

Plant & Pest Diagnostics (msu.edu)

I hope this helps.
