What's happening to this vine maple? #794542

Asked June 06, 2022, 3:58 PM EDT

We are very concerned about the degradation of a small vine maple tree we've had for years. For the first time, we noticed that just 1/2 of the tree had branched out in typical full bloom. The other side of the tree looks like it is just short of the dead of winter, with few leaves on it and of those, all are riddled with holes and look sickly. Can it be saved? A second question - our hellebore and hydrangea are being chewed, but we aren't seeing slug trails. Your suggestions?

Expert Response

Lack of a slime trail isn’t reliable to rule out slugs or snails. Nighttime detective work is needed to diagnose your chewed foliage. The Oregon State Extension publication EM9155 describes scouting after dark. Vine weevil and cutworm are other possible culprits, so check back here if need more control options.
Verticillium wilt Is a possibility for your vine maple. Provide a full view photograph of the tree. Also, see
the illustrations in the PNW Handbook page for verticillium wilt. Do your tree branches look similar in cross section or when sliced as illustrated?
