Is my red Oak dead #794080

Asked June 03, 2022, 4:05 PM EDT

We have a red oak that sits very near our house. Some of the branches are over the house. It is 60 or 70 years old, has always been healthy but thus far has not a single leaf nor bud. We heard that there was a disease last year and the trimmer waited because of that. Wondering if our tree is dead.

Expert Response

Sadly I think you will have to remove the tree. Oak wilt is a fungal disease that is killing many oaks throughout the midwest. The fungus grows in the vascular system of the tree cutting off wanter and nutrients that keep the tree alive.

So sorry for your loss.
