Newborn chicks eyes dried up. #793796

Asked June 02, 2022, 9:15 AM EDT

I received 6 day old chicks from a hatchery and when I first gave them water the water filled up their eye sockets and they shook their heads to get the water out of their eyes. This happened repeatedly for the first day. As the day went on their eyes were drying up like they couldn’t hold moisture and now I have to wipe their eyes with a warm cloth to keep them hydrated and open. I’ve contacted the hatchery and they insist it’s from a cold but they are not sick in any way. Then their latest reply is that ups ships adult birds and they could have got a respiratory infection from them. They have never had any sign of a respiratory problem. Is their anything you can suggest could be wrong with them and what should I do? Thank you Diana

Expert Response

Hi Diana,

Thanks for your question and for attaching the photo. It is not unusual for chicks to have trouble figuring out the water when they first arrive. Any additives to the water (vitamins, electrolytes, apple cider vinegar, etc.) or a slightly dirty waterer can irritate the eyes if a chick dunks its head in too far. If this is the cause, go ahead and clean the waterer out, and refill with warm, clean water with no additives. Continue wiping their eyes with a damp cloth to keep them open, but use a clean cloth each time you do this, and don't add anything to the cloth. Also be careful not to touch the cloth to the eyeball. Ideally a separate cloth should be used for each bird.

If a respiratory infection, you will likely notice other symptoms such as discharge from the eyes and nostrils, wheezing, coughing, lethargy, and/or inappetence. If this is the case, I would take them to your veterinarian to make sure it's not infectious. If it's bacterial, they can prescribe an antibiotic.

Best of luck!

Amy
