Cherry Bush Dying Back After Blooming #793722

Asked June 01, 2022, 4:15 PM EDT

I have two cherry bushes that start out beautiful in the spring and bloom wonderfully. After blooming the bushes start wilting and dying back. What could be the problem?

Marion County Oregon

Expert Response

Our cold wet spring made perfect conditions for foliar diseases. It seems like cherry and other Prunus sp. trees across the area were especially hard hit. It's a little hard to be 100% confident just from photos but this looks like a common fungal problem called brown rot. In most years you won't notice any issues but in these cold wet years it can pop up.

Are these trees that produce edible fruit or an ornamental flowering type? If you let me know I can provide more targeted management recommendations.
