Mushroom Identification #793581

Asked May 31, 2022, 10:34 PM EDT

I'm a Master Gardener for Isanti County and received a call today on our Yard and Garden Line from a woman who has mushrooms growing on a dead stump in her yard. She has cut them off and washed them (photos attached) and would like assistance identifying them. She said they have a strong licorice (anise) smell. In her research she believes they are Oyster Mushrooms. Does someone at the U of M have expertise on mushrooms and can correctly identify this mushroom? She would like to eat these if they are edible.

Expert Response

As Master Gardeners we are not mushroom experts.  We do not identify edible mushrooms. Nor do we have Extension faculty who are willing to do so.  We refer these questions to the Minnesota Mycological Society.  See:  https://minnesotamycologicalsociety.org/
