Need plant identification #793408

Asked May 31, 2022, 9:35 AM EDT

A neighbor got a plant start from a family member in the Montana-Idaho area, and it now appears to be thriving in Portland. It looks like some kind of flowering perennial: between 3 and 4 feet tall, with leaves clustered mostly at the lower part of the plant, and tall stems with purplish-pink blooms. (photo attached) Can you tell us what it is and how to keep it healthy?

Expert Response

This is Thalictrum. Commonly called meadow rue, you’ll find care instructions easily online. This looks like a purple Thalictrum aquilegifolium. Generally “meadow” conditions are best. I like to read growing descriptions from pacific northwest nursery websites, as they target growing in our situations.
