Bamboo Going to Seed #793208

Asked May 29, 2022, 2:07 PM EDT

Our large stand of bamboo is making seed heads. We do not know the variety, had always thought is was a mix with some yellow wood and some black. We aren't sure how old this stand is, so maybe they have just completed their life cycle, or maybe the late snow storm this year stressed them? The whole stand went from lush and green, to brown in about a month. Is it likely that the stand will die after going to seed? Do we need to cut them down before the seeds mature and spread around our neighborhood? This stand is our main source of privacy from our neighbor and provides shade from the afternoon sun. Yikes! Thanks so much for any information you can provide, Debbie

Thank you for your question.  Like other grasses, bamboo naturally die after flowering.  https://www2.palomar.edu/users/warmstrong/ecoph39.htm
You don't say whether the species you have is clumping (doesn't spread as fast) or running (spreads through underground rhizomes).  The latter are invasive.  You cannot revive it by pruning, regardless of the type.  You may need to find a different plant species or structure to solve the issues you describe.  Good luck!
