Tree Moss Question #792679

Asked May 25, 2022, 6:54 PM EDT

Hello, I have a tree in my backyard that appeared to be fine last year. This year we have noticed some yellow stuff on the tree that I think is moss or lichen? The tree only has leaves toward the bottom half of the tree. I am trying to figure out if this means something is wrong with my tree and if there is anything else I can do to ensure the tree remains healthy and continues to grow. I appreciate any help you may be able to provide!

Expert Response

Hello.  Thank you for letting me help you with your problem.  I’m afraid that my answer may not please you.  It looks like you have a European Beech tree.  I believe the yellow  you are seeing is an early stage of the wooly scale that it will result in the Beach Bark disease from a fungus introduced because of the scale.  The scale enter their piercing mouth part into the trunk of the tree and withdraws fluids, producing the wilt in the leaves you are seeing.  I am going to attach several fact sheets for you.  Usually much larger trees are affected.  Because yours is so young and small, I’m afraid too much damage has been done. Good luck
