Maple tree Follow up #0061739 #792293

Asked May 23, 2022, 5:12 PM EDT

Sorry my previous pictures did not go thru. Hopefully these are helpful. My maple tree begins leafing normally and then soon develops brown areas, misshapen leaves, and often the end 6-12” of many limbs fall off. Can you diagnose? Treatment?

Expert Response

It appears that your maple (is it a silver maple?) is infected with a common fungal disease called maple anthracnose. Newly emerged foliage is more susceptible to infection. In general, fungicides are not recommended for control of shade tree anthracnose. Large well established trees that are otherwise healthy can withstand the damage without serious long term affects.

A light application of fertilizer to provide readily-available nutrients and making sure the tree has adequate water during periods of drought over summer will help trees recover from the stress of putting out a new set of leaves.

Another thing you can do is to rake up and destroy the fallen leaves to prevent the fungal spores continuing to infect other leaves by rainfall or wind as the spores tend to overwinter on fallen leaves and twigs. Destroy them; do not compost. The information in the links below will give you some additional information.
