What is this tree? It spontaneously grew in an empty pot of dirt on my balcony and after 5 years it is sadly dying. It dropped its large heart-shaped leaves in Fall and grew fresh long green branches every spring. No flowering or pods.

Expert Response
It looks like something in the Populus family - maybe Populus deltoides - Eastern cottonwood - which is native to North America, or Populus nigra - Black poplar- which is European.
It must have grown from a seed blown into your pot. Do you see any trees with similar leaves around your neighborhood?
Since it never got large enough to flower, it's hard to say. Could be the cold snap we had this winter that did it in.
Hope this helps.
