Crabgrass #791622

Asked May 19, 2022, 11:15 AM EDT

Hi, I have a lot of large brown patches in my grass. The grass looks dead in these areas. I am wondering if it is the dead crab grass I am seeing. I planted new grass late last fall in areas where I had dirt brought in but the seed appears to just be lying on top of the dirt. Now, I am wondering if I should have a crabgrass preventer put down and forget about reseeding until the fall. Would this be a good plan or should I forget the crabgrass preventer and reseed now? I live in the St. Cloud area. Thanks much. Nancy

Thank you for the information. I will check for grubs.  I did have my lawn fertilized last fall. Would it be possible that the grass could have been burned by the fertilizer?  I know it’s hard to see in the pictures but the grass is more yellow than brown in many of the areas.  I haven’t done the fertilizing in a while and this is the first time I am seeing these spots in my grass.  Nancy

Thank you for writing back.
Fertilizer burn happens.  Some lawn services apply fertilizers in overdoses or too many applications.  One application a year is usually plenty.

The problem with fertilizer burn is that this is probably your first application of the year.

Chemical burns from weed killers is another problem. https://extension.umd.edu/resource/chemical-injury-lawns

Hi Steve, I checked my grass both the green grass next to the dead grass and also the dead grass itself. I did not find any grubs. I checked through the top soil. None of my neighbors is having this problem. This is the first year we have ever seen this. I know I had a lot of crab grass last year. So that is my next question. Should I put crab grass preventer down and then wait until fall to seed? Or should I seed now and do I have to take the dead grass out and put new dirt down? I have a very large yard with many of these dead spots or brown spots. Thanks in advance for helping me figure this out. Nancy

Thank you for writing back.
There are quite a few anthills in your lawn.
They are not as big as those made by field ants https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/field-ants/
but this could be funnel ants. https://blog-yard-garden-news.extension.umn.edu/2018/06/ants-in-turf.html

or cornfield ant https://extension.umn.edu/insects-infest-homes/ants#cornfield-ant-42361

Take a look and send a picture/
Thank you

Hi Steve, I am not sure if my email went through or not. I do have ants. I am not sure what kind but they look more like the cornfield ants but then again the damage to the grass seems more like the funnel ants. Anyway, should I treat the grass now with grab grass preventer and the ant insecticide or should I plant new grass first. Please let me know what you think. I will try to upload 2 pictures. It won't let me. Thanks for your help. Nancy
