Bumblebees licking leaves.... #791378

Asked May 18, 2022, 12:23 AM EDT

Okay, so I was in Jackson County at about 3000' and noticed Eriogonum compositum that was about to bloom, maybe less than a week off, and it was absolutely swarming with bumblebees (Bombus vosnesenskii ?) that were 'licking' the leaves. I have found some recent research indicating that bumblebees may stimulate early flowering by damaging leaves, and am wondering if this might be what's going on. Any thought you have would be super helpful! Thanks!

Hi Dayne,

Bees commonly lick leaves that get covered with honeydew which is a sugary secretion produced by aphids and similar insects.
I suspect this is the situation. It looks like there are aphids in one of the images you sent.
