Compacted soil #791174

Asked May 16, 2022, 11:37 PM EDT

I’ve really walked on the soil a lot during the last two springs where my yews and hostas are planted because I gave my huge overgrown yews a hard rejuvenation cut. Now I’ve read I shouldn’t be walking on the soil in the spring. The soil is incredibly hard, dry and compacted. Would using a plug aerator in there help with compaction since it helps with compacted lawns? I’d like to help repair the damage if that’s even possible. Thank you.

Hello Joyce,
Yes, you need to aerate the soil and top dress with about 1/4- 1/2 inch compost or composted manure.

A garden fork would work well for aeration. You can get deeper with it ( about 6 inches) than a plug aerator( usually 3inches)
Avoid any large roots, and don’t damage the trunks of your plants- stay about 12 inches away from main trunks. Do not pile mulch against the trunks- leave a “donut hole” space around them.
Mulch the area with something that will break down, like shredded or chipped bark or wood. This, with the compost, will help the soil.
You can repeat the aeration each year in spring or fall until the soil improves.
