Plant ID and will it tolerate juglone? #791130

Asked May 16, 2022, 6:22 PM EDT

Hello! My neighbor has had this plant potted for years but doesn't know what it is and would like to find it a new home. I would consider it, but don't know whether it would tolerate juglone from my walnut tree. Thank you in advance!

Hi Dana,
Just saw that this question was way overdue, sorry about that.  I received it 6-1-2022.
Looks like your shrub is a viburnum in need of care.  Viburnums can tolerate walnut trees.  I have read about some that are very tolerant and others that are somewhat tolerant.  I am sending you a link with other tolerant plants in case you want to plant something else near your walnut.
If you plant the shrub near the walnut tree, look for yellowing, stunted growth or no growth.  This will tell you that it does not like the location.   Since it is not thriving at this time, I would prune off the dead or fungus infested limbs, plant with compost, rotted manure or organic balanced fertilizer.  A quick shot of nitrogen with fish emulsion would be good as well.  They like acidic soil 5.5-6.0 so a dose of powdered sulfur (follow the package directions) will help you reduce the soil pH if needed.  A simple pH test of the soil will tell you what is needed.

Oregon States lists numerous varieties of viburnum:  https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/viburnum?
I hope this helps you make a decision.  Thank you for sending in your question.
