URGENT--Sudden rapidly spreading fungus on Dogwood Tree #791083

Asked May 16, 2022, 3:09 PM EDT

We have a Dogwood tree that is not a Pagoda Dogwqood, just a Dogwood with white flowers. We noticed Saturday an area we thought was bark chewing by squirrels. My husband went to wrap it and realized it was a fungus or some kind of disease. The next morning it had more than doubled in size. A neighbor who is a master gardener looked and didn't think it matched the canker fungus but we don't kniow what to do. We have a lot of decorative trees in the area (mostly service berry and birch) plus rhodedendrums, and lots of plants and shrus. What should we do? Treat? Take it out? What is it and is it a risk to the other plants?

Expert Response

Sorry for the slow reply, we are swamped!

I don't see any fungus. The bark has been chewed away and it looks like it is just oozing sap.
