Maple tree roots in front yard spreading towards our home #789756
Asked May 08, 2022, 12:43 PM EDT
Around 2009 we planted a Maple tree in our front yard. Over the years trunk has widen 9-10 inches and branches have grown very high. We are seeing root around 3" 4" inches spreading on the surface of our yard. Some of them are nearing our home. We are concerned those roots would damage foundation of the home. Any help is appreciated!

What type of maple? How close to the house is the tree? Please send a picture of the lower trunk area and the overall tree so we can more adequately assess the situation. Often maple trees are planted too deep and send circling surface roots up. In the meantime here is a website to review.

An onsite evaluation by an arborist may be indicated. See:

The tree is around 20ft from house. Photos attached. Please advise
Because this is already a large tree with surfacing roots, an onsite assessment by an arborist is needed. An arborist will probably have to remove some of the soil around the roots to get a good picture of whether this could be a dangerous tree. That is whether it is sending out surface roots that could damage the house or driveway. The other danger is that trees, especially maples, with shallow circling roots often fall during heavy winds. Some arborists will give an initial assessment visit without charge. We cannot say from the pictures whether this will damage the foundation or is likely to fall over in a storm.
