Weeping Cherry Problem #789067
Asked May 03, 2022, 10:54 AM EDT
I have a 6 ft. weeping cherry tree that I planted in my front yard almost 2 years ago. It is in full sun and bloomed last year. I noticed buds on the branches 3 to 4 weeks ago (see pictures), but the tree has not bloomed or produced leaves. The trunk seems to have a problems that have developed in the past month (see pictures). Do you have any advice or is my beautiful tree a goner?
Thank you,

Expert Response
Hi Denise,
First, thank you for the excellent pictures. Your tree has a fungal infection, most probably botryosphaeria. It is fairly common on trees and shrubs especially in times of cold and wet weather. Treatment with soil fungicides is possible, but tricky and there is no guaranteed success.
I've attached a pdf from the University of Virginia that will give you more information on cause and management.
You may also want to contact a certified arborist. You can find a list of certified arborist in Maryland at http://mdarborist.com/
Good luck and thank you for contacting us,
