sugar maple damage #788638

Asked April 30, 2022, 1:14 PM EDT

I live in Dublin, Ohio. I have a young sugar maple that has mysterious damage to bark. Bark is missing and it looks like small holes with something white protruding from the holes. I wonder if it is insect or possibly bird damage. Attached are three photos of the tree.

Expert Response

Hello, Jerry!

Thank you for your question and for including some excellent photos. They were most helpful.

I was not certain that I could identify your tree's problem correctly, so I turned to Joe Boggs, an entomologist and professor at Ohio State. His answer: "It’s oviposition damage from last season’s Brood X periodical cicada emergence. Parts of Dublin were hit pretty hard."

Here is an article that he published just last week about the issue: https://bygl.osu.edu/index.php/node/1951

It talks about the wound closure that will hopefully occur on your Sugar Maple. Only time will tell.

Please feel free to respond to this post if you need clarification or if you have further questions.
