Brown spots on star jasmine leaves #788398
Asked April 28, 2022, 2:09 PM EDT
I have star jasmine in 2 large pots (approximately 3' tall by 18" wide) that we planted last summer. There are some yellowish leaves and also some with brownish spots... more in one pot than the other. What should I do? Also, my husband has put pistachio shells on top of the potting soil. Is that a good or bad idea? Lots of new growth is starting on both plants.

Thank you for your question, Debra. It is important to see what is under the leaves, as well as what symptoms you observe on top. Many insects attach themselves to the underside of leaves, suck out the chlorophyll, and then yellow to brown to black spots appear on the top surface. The following Extension article has a list of possible insects that can do this under "Invertebrates." http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/GARDEN/PLANTS/starjasmine.html Can you examine the leaves to see what, if anything, is there, and take a photo for us?
Nut shells make a good mulch so long as the plant from which they are harvested had no diseases, which you probably would not know unless you grew the tree yourself. Here in Oregon, filbert shells are used by many nurseries without ill effects. I hope this is helpful. Good luck!
