Hello,
I have attached a couple photos of a seed pod and seed, and wondered if you might be able to help me to identify what type of plant they come from. The seed pod is divided in 3 parts; spiny on the outside. The seeds are smooth and brown, have a line down the center and look almost like polished wood.

You appear to have a well-weathered castor bean seed pod. The seed is either a green or red podded castor bean (Ricinus communis).
This plant is easy to grow and can become 8 -10 ft. tall, The seeds contain ricin and are extremely toxic if ingested.
Castor bean plants come in at least 9 different varieties as described below. I have grown 3 of these varieties and especially like the New Zealand variety.
