Asked April 25, 2022, 2:26 PM EDT

Hi - do you have an expert and/or advice to hel;p me determine if my dead and dying boxwood plants are infected with "boxwood blight?" There are other possibilities, including too much shade, overwatering. Thank you and PS I do live in Oregon

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Barton.  There are 4 known diseases of boxwood in the PNW.  Although blight has been detected, this doesn't appear to be your plants' problem.  I see none of the black spots it has.  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/boxwood-buxus-spp-box-blight
What is more likely, depending upon soil conditions. is this:  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/boxwood-buxus-spp-phytophthora-root-crown-rot
Since the defoliation appears to be so extreme, I suggest that you submit a sample of the plant tissue and soil to the OSU Plant Disease Clinic:  https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/plant-clinic
I hope they can help.  Good luck!
