offshoots on Elephant Ear Bulb #787622

Asked April 22, 2022, 11:52 AM EDT

I am inexperienced in Elephant ears, so maybe this is a silly question. What are the offshoots on the bulb? Do I need to do anything with/about them? Thank you.

Expert Response

We suggest keeping these offshoots attached when you plant the bulb, since accidentally removing them prematurely could cause them to die instead of sprouting. It's typical for Alocasia and Colocasia (the two related genera commonly named Elephant Ear) to produce these "bulblets" beneath the soil. Eventually, they can mature into new plants to turn the parent plant into a clump of plants. At that point, if you want, you can experiment with dividing them into separate containers.
